Writing Essays - The Monster in Faulkner's Story, A Rose for Emily

Writing Essays - The Monster in Faulkner's Story, A Rose for Emily

To help you write essays about literature, here's a miniature pathology I've worked up on William Faulkner's very acclaimed short story, "A Rose for Emily" (Note: You may want to read and study the story online as you corollary my reasoning, here, so generate an additional one tab in your browser, then go to Google search and type in "A Rose for Emily" and be sure to type the quote marks; you can use Alt-Tab to move between the story and this article):

Writing Essays - The Monster in Faulkner's Story, A Rose for Emily

As I've pointed out in other articles, every story - whether a short story or a novel - has to have some major change by the end. This change is the most leading factor to keep in mind when you analyze and then write essays about any story, whether short or long.

What is that change? Why, a new view reverse, of policy - always!

Writing Essays - The Monster in Faulkner's Story, A Rose for Emily

Writing Essays - The Monster in Faulkner's Story, A Rose for Emily

I'll show you how to use the following three-step new view pathology process on Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," which you can then use on any short story -

#1 - At the beginning of a short story, a strong value statement, an old view, is given by or about the main character, asserting an assessment or describing some characteristic, goal, or desire.

As we start this masterful short story, the old view pops right out at us - it's the very first sentence:

When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral: the men straight through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old manservant-a combined gardener and cook-had seen in at least ten years.

Note that I've bolded respectful affection. That sounds like a pretty strong value statement, doesn't it, especially since the "whole town went to her funeral." inquire is, how will that strong clear value about Emily change by the end of the story?

#2 - In the middle of a short story, the old view is supported or undercut with descriptions, conflicts, and resolutions to conflicts that set up the new view at the end.

Now, I'm not going to comment on all things in the story. But did you consideration that every section of the story has something to do with the townspeople's respect for Emily? Sometimes there was even affection along with the respect.

Description: Several descriptions occur in this short story, but one stands out from the rest. In the first section, after the brief introduction, the board of alderman from the town (city councilmen) have come to her mansion to meet with Miss Emily to convince her to pay her taxes, and - They rose when she entered - a small, fat woman in black, with a thin gold chain descending to her waist and vanishing into her belt, leaning on an ebony cane with a tarnished gold head. Her skeleton was small and spare, bloated....

Note that Miss Emily is dressed in black, with a contrasting thin gold chain descending to her waist and vanishing into her belt. At the end of that chain, no doubt, is a watch, which makes a form eight of the chain with the out-of-sight watch at the end, over her abdomen. Her body is covered in black clothing and she is bloated, both face and abdomen, while her arms and legs are small and spare or thin, like the cane she carries.

We cannot grasp the significance of this article until the new view in the final scene of the story, which I'll comment on then, of course. Just keep this article in mind, okay? We'll bring it up again at the end of this discussion.

Conflict: In the second section, neighbors complain that bad smells from Emily's house are contaminating the neighborhood. But the town's aldermen respectfully refuse to talk to Emily about it, refuse to accuse a lady to her face of smelling bad.

Resolution: To avoid a friction with Emily about the smell, the aldermen respectfully took it upon themselves to go out at night and sprinkled lime about the grounds and in the cellar of Emily's house to get rid of the smell. The smell disappears in two weeks.

Conflict: Also in the second section, Emily refused for three days to admit that her father had died and wouldn't let anyone in to take his body to get it ready for burial.

Resolution: The townspeople show respectful pity for Emily by not forcefully entering and taking the body to get it ready for funeral and burying. After three days, their respectful pity finally influences Emily, who easily broke down emotionally and let them in.

Conflict: The third section ends in a friction that Emily has with the town druggist. She asks the druggist for some poison. But because he is required by law to article what the poison will be used for, the druggist keeps trying to get Emily to say what she'll do with the poison. But Miss Emily just stared at him. No matter what the druggist said, she wouldn't talk to the question.

Resolution: The druggist gave Emily the poison anyway, in spite of the law. He merely filled in the facts himself, For rats, without any input from her. He gave in to Emily out of respect for her communal position, no doubt, as we have seen so often.

Conflict & Resolution: Toward the end of the fourth section, a minor friction and resolution occurred and passed speedily on, with Emily winning yet an additional one friction because of the town's respectful affection for her: When the town got free postal delivery, Miss Emily alone refused to let them fasten the metal numbers above her door and attach a mailbox to it. She would not listen to them.

In every case of friction in the story, respectful affection for Emily and respect for her communal position is what resolves the friction that the townspeople have with Emily's conduct.

#3. At the end of a short story, a new view reverse of the old view is usually revealed.

In section five of the story, at Emily's funeral, the townspeople wait respectfully until Emily is buried before they break into (which can be viewed as a kind of conflict/resolution, too) the upper room of her mansion, which has been locked for years, probably decades. The room is covered with very fine dust, and they find there a decaying skeleton in the bed, obviously belonging to Homer, Emily's boyfriend of decades ago.

In the pillow right next to the skeleton is the surprise - they find a deep indentation where person must have laid their head repeatedly and somewhat recently, because they find there a long seacoast of iron-grey hair in the indentation - Emily's hair, without a doubt, since Faulkner has described Emily's hair as iron grey.

Here's the new view-the respectful affection of the townspeople at the start of the story must turn around, must reverse to a strong revulsion after they learn that Emily killed her lover and slept with his decaying body straight through many years, even decades. It takes some kind of a repulsive monster to do something like that!

With that belief in mind, recall the article of Emily in the first section: a small, fat woman in black. While not a excellent match, that article is fairly close to that of a black widow spider. Remember the form eight - the thin gold chain - ending out of sight on the bloated abdomen? And the spare or thin limbs, with the cane adding a fifth sort of limb, which is one more than half of the eight limbs of a spider? Remember the fat, bloated body? So this view of Emily killing her lover is very like a black widow spider killing her male partner.

Why did the townspeople break into that locked room in the first place? They weren't sure what was in there, but they improbable to find something leading there, obviously. And that something provided a new view reverse of respectful affection for Miss Emily, at the very least for the reader, if not for the townspeople, as well.

Now, these sample thesis statements can help give you a some ideas for writing a strong essay on William Faulkner's superbly crafted short story, "A Rose for Emily:"

Faulkner uses his short story,A Rose for Emily, to justify the theme that, 'Human nature can be corrupted when an personel is given too many unearned privileges and too much undeserved respectful affection.' In a surprise ending, William Faulkner's short story, A Rose for Emily, reveals how a community steeped in a tradition of respect for communal position can be so tragically, so ironically wrong. In A Rose for Emily, Faulkner repeatedly uses friction and resolution to hammer home the respectful affection the townspeople have for Emily-until the end. Descriptive imagery about the mansion in A Rose for Emily adds to the revelation about Miss Emily's true character at the end, which has been underground by the house for decades. In A Rose for Emily, the single long seacoast of iron-grey hair at the end becomes a stamp suggesting Emily killed her boyfriend, which clears up the incidents of the smell, the rat poison, and the disappearance of Homer-not to mention reversing the townspeople's ever-present respectful affection for Emily.

Top 10 Tv Shows of 2009 You Need to Start Watching Now

Note: The Shield and The Wire are both extremely recommended, but because both shows had ended in 2008, they are not included on this list (among many others).

Top 10 Tv Shows of 2009 You Need to Start Watching Now

Top 10 Tv Shows

10. Fringe

(Fox - 2008 - Sci-Fi)

At first this show didn't stick with many of us on the must watch show list, but the unique plots lured us back and now we think it a must watch. This show is about a government task force tracking down paranormal operation with the help of a investigate scientist, Walter Bishop (actor John Noble), who has the characteristics of Frankenstein and the brilliance of Albert Einstein rolled into one, his sarcastic son Peter Bishop (actor Joshua Jackson), and Fbi Agent Olivia Dunham (Actress Anna Torv). Besides the X-Files element in this show, one of the things viewers will notice is the parent-child friction specifically between Walter and Peter as they try to settle cases. Fringe is big on conspiracies and some intense twists on "fringe science". This show just stands out from the rest in its plot developments.
9. Monk
(Usa - 2002 - Dramedy)

Background: This is the inventor of the website talking, Nick Shin. Call me an idiot or ridiculous and I undoubtedly deserve both, but I personally ignored this incredibly humorous show for about 6 years solely because of the title; not once did I give this show a opportunity before 2008. I conception the show was undoubtedly about a monk and the adventures inside the monastery. I figured how can a show about a monk and a monastery be remotely interesting. Bad assumption (don't judge a show by its title?) On a random weekend in 2008, I was incredibly bored, had no commitments, and had all the time in the world. Thus, my introduction to Monk. Now onto why you need to start watching too.
Monk is one of those shows where every particular person in the world can communicate to its main character, Adrian Monk (actor Tony Shalhoub). How? 3 words, obsessive compulsive disorder (Ocd). Your situation may not be as, to put it lightly, as severe as Monk's, but every person has some sort of Ocd either it be washing your hands in a determined way, putting on your socks/shoes a determined way, morning routine, bedtime routine, and on and on. The title character of this show works as an obsessive compulsive underground detective and advisor for the San Francisco Police group homicide unit. At one point, and (fans) precise us if we're wrong, Monk's nurse/assistant pointed out 120 or so phobias. What's animated about this show is not only Monk's brilliance and attentiveness to detail on the field as he solves the cases, but Monk's capability to deal with his numerous phobias throughout the show together with the always humorous therapy sessions. It is the subtleties of Monk and the characters around him that becomes a laugh out loud moment. Each episode is a stand alone so start watching this show.
8. In Treatment
(Hbo - 2008 - Drama)

Each episode of In rehabilitation features therapist Dr. Paul Weston (actor Gabriel Byrne) having a session with one of five patients. The casting for this diminutive known show offers an array of characters fluctuating from teens to middle aged and singles to married couples. In rehabilitation displays a full range of emotions with superb acting that makes you care about and believe what you are watching. One of the more unique and riveting parts of this show is the portrayal of the therapist (Paul) going to his own therapist. The character amelioration and the artistic storytelling is brilliant. This show might make you uncomfortable at times and it might take a lot out of you, but what we do know is that the composition of startling acting, storytelling, and character amelioration will get you hooked; don't give up after one episode.
7. Breaking Bad
(Amc- 2008 - Dramedy)

Quite maybe the most animated show and most customary show to watch right now, Walter White (actor Bryan Cranston - the dad from Malcolm in the Middle) quite simply is a high school chemistry instructor diagnosed with concluding lung cancer going entrepreneurial to raise sufficient money for his family. Well, the entrepreneurial part isn't exactly what one might guess and this is where the show becomes extremely entertaining. Walt decides to team up with a old student, whom Walt flunked, to get into the crystal-meth business. How's that for unique writing? If you've ever felt you've been way in over your head, you will undoubtedly enjoy watching this show as Walt swiftly learns the dangers of competing with rival meth dealers.
6. It's always Sunny In Philadelphia (Iasip)
(Fx - 2005 - Comedy)

Remember Seinfeld? The show from the 90's that every person seemed to enjoy immensely due to its random plots and often industrial resolutions. The oft-imitated formula has been mirrored throughout the years, but one show in particular has nailed it on the head. Iasip is maybe the funniest show on television due to the determined lack of rules or shame. We ensue the lives of Mac, Charlie, Dennis, and Dee as they task and screw habitancy over on an hourly basis. In the end, all blows up in their faces in a industrial fashion. If there was ever a show that embodies the basic drives of the human nature within all of us, this is it. Just watch it. Now.
5. Entourage
(Hbo - 2004 - Dramedy)

We know, whatever who hasn't been hiding under a rock knows about the show so we'll try to make this one short. Entourage deserves a spot on any "best of" Tv shows list. The only guess why the "professional" critics do not comprise this show is because of its target audience. There are just some out of the target demographic that do not want to watch quirky, douchebag-like, 20 (and 40?) somethings, and their adventures as a group. We know that it is extremely hard to argue that Entourage is the most well-written show or even best performed (although Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold is undoubtedly great and the guess why you should start watching), but this show just entertains. It is mindlessly distracting and addicting.
4. Dexter
(Showtime - 2006 - Dramedy)

How many of us have a dark side? A extra side (mmmm, frites) that lays dormant within our mind and only comes out for extra occasions. If you raised your hand, then you need to watch Dexter. Dexter is a forensic blood spatter analyst by day for the Miami-Metro Police group (Mmpd) and a serial killer by night. Before you turn to a distinct website in disgust, you need to know that Dexter has a conscious. As a youth, Dexter show signs of a sociopath, but his adoptive father, a detective for the Mmpd, took those tendencies and taught Dexter to use them for the good of mankind, or in this case, killing habitancy who have escaped their due punishment from the justice system. The show is in no shortage of thrills and suspense. Touching, clever, exciting, and often humorous, Dexter, is one anti-hero that every one can communicate to, even if you don't want to admit it.
3. Damages
(Fx- 2007 - Drama)

Thought the show was canceled? undoubtedly many of you reading this top 10 list comprehend it's been awhile due to the writer's strike. Well, it's back and it's wonderful. With the final episode of season 1 airing back in October 2007, the second season is (well, has been) officially back. Due to the hiatus, Damages has fallen off the radar, but this show undoubtedly deserves a "best of Tv shows" nod. Damages is a legal thriller that stars Glenn Close as the great and ruthless litigator Patty Hewes. The show revolves around Patty and her protege, Ellen Parsons (actress Rose Byrne). With so many legal thrillers on the air, it's hard to communicate how and why this series stands out head and shoulders above all the others. To put it simply, superb acting, animated writing, thought-provoking, an actual story line as opposed to one story per episode, and in true sense of the word, a thriller. The story itself is intriguing, but it's the storytelling and the performances that undoubtedly make this show a must watch now. We feel like this is still not doing the show justice....let's see, you will never be bored watching this show; it is consistent from starting to end. The folks at Fx is doing something right and every person needs to take notice.
2. Rescue Me
(Fx- 2004 - Dramedy)

We all enjoyed The Sopranos. It made us feel bad and yet, so good. The ultimate anti-hero, Tony Soprano, was person we hated and loved at the same time. Since it left television, where does one go to root for a likeable bad guy? The respond is Rescue Me. The main character, Tommy Gavin (actor Denis Leary), is a member of the Nyfd. He is about as rough as they come and extremely respected for his displays of bravery on the field.
Whether he is sleeping around with widows of victims from 9/11 (a large theme while the show), abusing drugs and alcohol, hitting habitancy and being a sleezeball, one can see why Tommy Gavin is not a likeable fellow....on the show. However, we in the real world find ourselves enamored with a guy that is a coin-flip away from being cool or being a turd, just like Tony Soprano.

Top 10 Tv Shows

Here is a list of similarities between The Sopranos and Rescue Me
* Sopranos = New Jersey. Rescue Me = New York. You can associate the two.
* Infidelity
* Drug and alcohol abuse
* Curse like sailors
* Violence towards strangers, friends and family
* Hallucinations
We are sure the list could go on, but it would distract the attentiveness away from this show you need to watch. Feel free to comment if you find supplementary similarities and we will think adding it to the list. Anyway, this is a big show that only adds to Fx's taste in great shows. Watch it.
1. Mad Men
(Amc- 2007 - Drama)
Top 10 Tv Shows
Okay, you get it, we get it, Mad Men is a great show based on the countless estimate of critics and wannabe critics like ourselves. By now Mad Men (and Amc for that matter) has received the major props it deserves, but we cannot emphasize it enough. We would never have imagined the slowest possible drama on television topping our list of "must watch Tv for 20093. Where's the action, where's the humor, where's the favorable douchebag that we like to talk about, where's the [insert supplementary analogies]. With all that said and the hype the show has been garnering since its debut, we still think Mad Men is an underrated show.
Definition of Mad Men as explained while the first episode - "In the 1950s and 1960s, the advertising commerce was based on Madison Avenue in New York City. In fact, 'Madison Avenue' used to be slang for 'the ad industry'. Madison/ad men was contracted into "mad men" by the mad men themselves."
Top 10 Tv Shows
For those still doubting this top Tv show to watch now, maybe the very guess you are not watching this show is because of the time frame in history in which the story takes place; we admit, it was for us. The 60s was far before any of our times at all Topped, and based on the show the 60s was racist, sexist, unhealthy (based on the estimate of cigarattes the characters smoke every 5 seconds), and most importantly, a transition period. Actor Jon Hamm as the lead character, Don Draper, is great as the creative director at Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency. Don struggles to stay ahead of the changing times and the young executives at the group all the whilst development the plays in the boardroom (and bedroom). The intense performances are portrayed not only in Don's personal life, but also through the unique aspect of how habitancy sell themselves in the ad industry. The characters are complex, sophisticated, and well developed. It's a slow animated drama, yes, and many who are impatient and simply close-minded, will not enjoy Mad Men. Getting a truly precise picture of a time when not many shows or movies are set makes this the top show you need to start watching for 2009.

Seiko Watches

With a history of over one hundred years, the Seiko watch is one of the most recognized watches in existence today. In Japanese, the word Seiko is translated to mean "success", which is exactly what has transpired with Seiko and its products. In 1924 the first Seiko brand watch was produced. Seiko's "Astron", a quartz watch which cost about the same as an automobile was introduced in 1969. It followed with its chronograph watch.

In 2005, Seiko introduced its spring drive which is intended to provide up to seventy two hours of power rather than their usual forty hours. In favor of a Tri-synchro regulator, it replaces the former equilibrium wheel escapement. Spring power turns the wheels and generates power for the oscillator.

Celebrities and Their diamond Engagement Rings

What great way to show the world that you are in love than by the act of giving and receiving a solitaire engagement ring? With many actresses and other noted women sporting bigger and sparklier solitaire rings, celebrity engagements have come to be a satisfaction for the jewelry lover. The size of the solitaire is not necessarily the key as to what makes some of these rings so noted and recognizable, rather it seems to be a compound of the engagement ring itself and the noted lady it is linked with.

Maximillan I of Austria gave the first solitaire engagement ring on description to Mary of Burgundy in 1477. He had the ring commissioned to unite their two houses and make their marriage a unifying sticker to the country.

The smallest solitaire engagement ring ever made was given to Princess Mary who was married by proxy to the Dauphin of France in the year 1518. Princess Mary was two years old at the time.

Throughout history solitaire engagement rings have come to be larger, more elaborate, and have included a wide collection of other jewels and metals. solitaire engagement rings settings can be made of silver, platinum, white or yellow gold or a compound of these elements.

Famous ladies and their engagement rings

Celebrities and other noted habitancy work on the look and style of many aspects in fashion and also set trends. solitaire engagement rings are no exception to this rule. The following is a partial list of the noted ladies and their equally noted engagement rings:

Royalty:

Queen Elizabeth Ii received an engagement ring from Prince Phillip that was made from diamonds from his mother's tiara. Grace Kelly was given a 12 carat emerald-cut solitaire engagement ring from Prince Rainier. Lady Diana was engaged with a ring made of an 18 carat blue oval sapphire that was circled by fourteen diamonds.
Actresses:

Elizabeth Taylor was engaged to her third husband, Michael Todd, with an emerald cut solitaire that weighed approximately 30 carats. However, she is more known for her other pieces of jewelry, one more stunning than the other: the 39 carat Krupp diamond, the 69.42 carat pear-shaped Taylor-Burton solitaire and the 17th century heart-shaped Taj Mahal diamond. Priscilla was engaged to Elvis with a 3.5 carat solitaire engagement ring that was circled by an additional one 21 smaller diamonds and solitaire chips.Sharon Stone was given a three diamond, 3 1/2 carat emerald-cut solitaire engagement ring by Phil Bronstien. Catherine Zeta-Jones' promise to Michael Douglas was finalized with a 10 carat old marquise solitaire estimated at amost million.Joan Collins got a heart-shaped solitaire ring in a nineteenth-century setting from husband Percy Gibson.
Pop stars:

Madonna received from Guy Ritchie an old Edwardian three-stone solitaire ring with a decorative platinum band. The Neil Lane ring was supposed to characterize their family: mother, father and son Rocco. In the case of Toni Braxton, drummer Keri Lewis designed a stunning 4.5 three-stone solitaire ring with an oval-shaped town stone and 2 heart-shaped diamonds on the sides. Paris Hilton, even though not a pop star but a diva anyway, received 2 solitaire engagement rings from billionaire Paris Latsis, a million 24 carat canary solitaire ring and a .1 million 15 carat white solitaire ring.Britney Spears has two engagement rings also: one that she bought for herself before the wedding, a ,000 4 carat cushion-cut solitaire ring with a platinum pave setting, and one that she received 9 month after the marriage from husband Kevin Federline. Christina Aguilera became engaged to Jordan Bratman after he presented a ,000 20-carat solitaire engagement ring designed by jeweler Stephen Webster. Whitney Houston sports a stunning 4 carat oval-shaped town stone with trillions on the sides which she received from Bobby Brown.
Replica solitaire engagement rings

Of policy there is the very noted pink solitaire ring that Ben Affleck gave to Jennifer Lopez. This 6 carat radiant shaped pink solitaire fast caught the attention of the public and has come to be a extremely sought after replica. It is completed with a platinum band as well as three baguette white diamonds on each side. The pink solitaire engagement ring is reported to have been purchased for .2 million in 2002. The ring, while indubitably identified is also very feminine and modern looking.

Replicas of the noted pink solitaire ring are now available for a moderate price. The cost of the replicas depends on the quality of the stones and the materials used in reproducing the pink solitaire engagement ring.

Some replicas are styled as more old solitaire engagement rings. These rings have an everlasting quality and symbolize tradition and heritage. The recent engagement of Camilla Parker Bowles in February of 2005 featured such an old engagement ring. The platinum ring has an emerald-cut town solitaire with three solitaire baguettes on each side. This ring originally belonged to the Queen mother and is believed to be valued at over million.

Since few habitancy can afford the customary item, there will all the time be a shop for replicas of these one of a kind solitaire engagement rings. The quality of the replicas varies, as does the price. It is leading to note that the styles of solitaire engagement rings that are beloved with celebrities will soon come to be the styles that are sought after by the not quite so rich and famous.

nautical Star Tattoos The History, Meaning And Symbolism - What A Strange Mix!

nautical Star Tattoos The History, Meaning And Symbolism - What A Strange Mix!

The history, meaning and symbolism of nautical star tattoos is
a hotly debated topic. Today many distinct groups have
adopted the nautical star tattoo as a fastener for their own
movement and they have all ascribed their own meaning and
history to the symbol. Thus has lead to a wide
disagreement as the the meaning of the tattoo.Historically
most everyone agrees that Sailors were the first citizen to get
nautical star tattoos. In fact the very word nautical
relates back to sailing. So this connection has been
pretty firmly established. Most citizen would agree the
sailors were a pretty superstitious group historically and
sailor lore abounds with superstitious and fantastical stories
of life and death and being lost at sea. Early on
sailors navigated by the stars at night and the north star
became the fastener for seeing ones way home. Once you
know where the north star is you can point your ship in the
right direction to get home. So the star became a fastener
for seeing ones way home or more symbolically even seeing
ones path in life. Therefore many sailors would tattoo
nautical stars on their forearms as a good luck fastener in
hopes of returning home.

nautical Star Tattoos The History, Meaning And Symbolism - What A Strange Mix!

nautical Star Tattoos The History, Meaning And Symbolism - What A Strange Mix!

However their contemporary day meaning is a more debated topic.
Many believe that groups along with gay and lesbians, punk
rockers and those in the soldiery have adopted the nautical
star tattoo as a very leading symbol. The diversity of
these three groups has lead many to argue the meaning of their
tattoos.

For the soldiery the connection is pretty obviously point
back to the early sailors and the symbolism and meaning is the
same as the early sailors. Many soldiery citizen get a
nautical star tattoo as a fastener for seeing ones path home
safely. Of policy this can also consist of more
symbolically just seeing ones way in life.

Here is a quote we found from a member of the armed
services and his interpretation of the tattoo:

"I am in the United States Army, an Mp who searched towns
and villages for Al Quida and insurgents. I was in Iraq for 1
year. I have a red and black nautical star on my wrist. The
reason I got it was because when I was out there, I felt it
was a guide to guide me home to my house safely. I got it so
that it would remind me that I am going to make it to see my
son grow up. I am not gay, it doesn't matter what you believe
it represents, it means something distinct for everyone. Out
in the desert, I would look up at the stars and think about
home. So anything can think what they want to, that is what it
means to me. "

Punk rockers have also adopted this as a popular fastener to
have tattooed. The punk movement traces its history and
use of the nautical star tattoo back to Sailor Jerry.
Sailor Jerry is historically one one of the most renowned tattoo
artists ever. He was well known for his innovative and
"cool" designs. Punks have taken this fastener and it has
very much the same meaning of seeing one way in life.
Being the rugged individualists type Punks are drawing to the
symbolism of true north and seeing one own unique way in
life. So the nautical star has come to be a fastener for this.
You see many punk bands that have full sleeve tattoos
typically combine nautical star tattoos whether on their
elbows or elsewhere.

The lesbian and gay connection is the one that does not
seem so confident at first. Historically back in the
1940's and 50's when alternative lifestyles were not the norm
and often women had to hide their alternative choices they
would sport a underground nautical star. Often they would get
the star tattoo done on the inside of their wrist where it
could literally be underground by a watch while the day but shown off
in the evening when out on the town. Today many lesbians
where the nautical star tattoo to show their connection with
their early pioneering sisters. Here is a exiguous
evidence to keep my points.

"Here's the duct (with some pieces dropped) from "Boots
of Leather, Slippers of Gold: The History of a Lesbian
Community" by Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy and Madeilne D. Davis
copyright 1993 p. 189.

(talking about the 1940's and 1950's):

"...During this same time period, the cultural push to be
identified as lesbians- or at least different- all the time
was so powerful that it generated a new form of identification
among the tough bar lesbians: a star tattoo on the top of the
wrist, which was commonly covered by a watch. This was the
first fastener of society identity that did not rely on
butch-fem imagery. We can trace this phenomenon back to an
evening of revelry in the late 1950's, when a few butches
trooped over to "Dirty Dick's" tattoo parlor on Chippewa
Street and had the tiny blue five-pointed star put on their
wrists. Later, some of the fems of this group also go the idea
one night and did it...The society views the tattoo as a
definite mark of identification..."the Buffalo police knew
[that] the citizen that had the stars on their wrist were
lesbians and they had their names and so forth. That it was an
identity thing with the gay community, with the lesbian
community". The fact that the star tattoo was created by those
who were firmly into roles, in fact by the group that was
considered the butchy butches and their fems, recommend that the
force to profess lesbian identity was strong enough to break
through the existing traditions of boldness based in butch-fem
roles. The stars presage the methods of identity created by
gay liberation. In fact, the mark has come to be something of a
tradition in local circles and has seen a revival since the
1970s."

This meaning of the fastener has of policy created a lot of
problems and arguments among the other two groups of bearers
of nautical stars. Most puck and soldiery citizen do not
want to have a nautical star that points back to anything from
the lesbian movement so many will say that there is no
connection there and this is false.

Here is a quote from other armed soldiery member about the
symbolism of the nautical star among the gay community:

"This "gay symbol" is a load of hooey that someone made up
Very recently. The nautical star tattoo has been colse to nearly
as long as tattooing itself. The late Celts (or early Irish,
depending on your view of World History) were said to have
been the first to have the tattoos, although evidence of it
being used on ships in Spain has been found pre-dating the
Irish claim.

As a Marine, it's a very commonplace fastener surrounded by us if
we have been part of a Boat Raid company, red for port, green
for starboard on varying parts of the body. On ship, I saw
about a million distinct variations on the Sailors I was was
serving with, obviously harking back to the sailor roots."

Here is a quote from a punk rocker and his feelings about
the symbolism of the tattoo:

"what idiots..even the soldiery boys dont know what it
really means....Just So You All Know!!!!!it was used by Old
sailors.. And the fastener represents North on a Map ...and it
is the North Star the sailors would use it as a baring to get
home....you can find it on literally literally old maps and old navy
vessels... Punk Rock.. Well we use it because we can and
because Sailor Jerry made the coolest tattoos who started
putting them on everyone.. My grandfather even had one thus
being used as a customary icon"

It just goes to show that when the same powerful fastener is
used over and over again over decades of time it can taken on
very distinct meanings for distinct groups. So all of
those that you see sporting a nautical star tattoo might not
all have the same interpretation of its symbolism.

So do you have a nautical star tattoo or think about
getting one in the future? Which meaning of the fastener
will you get the nautical star for? As long as you know
what the symbolism behind the star is for and you have gotten
it for the right hypothesize to whether keep the lesbian movement
or as a fastener to seeing your way!

Children's Jewelry - Earrings for Sensitive Ears

What metal is best for children's jewelry? What are the best earrings for sensitive ears? First let's start with what to avoid: nickel.

Children's Jewelry - Earrings for Sensitive Ears

Reactions to earrings are caused by metal allergies, which vary in intensity from mild to severe. If person has a mild nickel allergy they may be able to wear nickel jewelry for a day, whereas those with severe nickel allergies must not only avoid all nickel jewelry, but also nickel watches and buttons.

When seeing for nickel free jewelry, make sure that it meets the European Nickel-Free Standard. Currently the United States does not have a standard, whereas the European approved requires an item consist of no more than 0.05% nickel (or no more than 1 part in 2,000). For more facts on the European nickel ban, experience the Mjsa (Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America) at 1-800-444-6572.

What most citizen don't comprehend is that nickel is gift in stainless steel (usually about 8% in jewelry), and will cause reactions in many. Metals other than nickel can also cause reactions. One person may not tolerate sterling, but is able to wear 14K gold. Other can't tolerate 14K gold, but can wear niobium (more on niobium later).

14-Karat gold is 14 parts gold out of 24. Pure gold is 24 karats. This is too soft to be functional, so it is alloyed with other meals for durability, cost and color. Depending on the color of gold (which can be yellow, rose, green or white), the other parts may be copper, silver, nickel, zinc, tin, palladium and/or manganese. (White gold contains nickel.) Those with metal allergies will sometimes react to 14K gold, but not to 18K gold with its fewer impurities.

For those with severe metal allergies, niobium is often the metal of choice. Niobium is an inert, costly metal used for surgical implants, and can be found in a variety of colors when used for jewelry. Most citizen who are sensitive to metals tolerate niobium well.

While there is no one best metal for everyone, the best earrings for sensitive ears are made from the following materials:

Sterling silver (a silver and copper alloy) Niobium (a nickel-free inert metal) Nickel free jewerly Plastic earwires, posts and post covers (post covers are polyethylene sleeves that go over earring posts so no metal touches the ear)

Any of the above materials are good for children's earrings, with sterling being a good first choice.

It is said that male appearance got changed more in this decade than any other time in the century. In the Us, fashion was focused on uncomplicated and longer skirts. Jeans became more popular, becoming an suitable item in the fashion scene. Some of the designers who rose to popularity were Calvin Klein and someone else Us designer, Ralph Lauren. Meanwhile, Pierre Cardin popularized a staple style of clothing featuring narrow shoulders with tight fitting lines, having no tie and interfacing, and coupled with jackets and tunics. Men also opted to dress down, regarded as hippie', and this gained recognition as more of a deliberate look.

One of the more innovative designers of the decade was Kenzo Takada, who mixed Western and Oriental influences to generate a new fashion trend. someone else name worthy to mention is Sonia Rykiel, who created form hugging knits. An Italian designer who made waves in this decade was Giorgio Armani, who made a distinctively prosperous variety of clothes for women in 1975.

It was also while the '70s when fashion trends began to cross borders quickly. Western fashion trends were looked upon by the rest of the world. Synthetic materials were also introduced. The decade also got inspiration from fashion trends in the previous decades.

The former Sun of God

The former Sun of God

The history of sun worship, so seemingly foreign to the Western mind has, in fact, manifested itself into Christianity in many ways as the story of Jesus in the Gospels. So diminutive was known about the life of Jesus, any and all writing styles from Midrash (searching past scriptures for "hints" of how they might apply to the present) to discerning the story of the Zodiac and it's constellations were used to fill in what was clearly missing in the literal record.

The former Sun of God

The former Sun of God

The former Sun of God

The former Sun of God

The former Sun of God

Consider our "modern" terms, Horizon and Sun Set. These terms belie their aged history. Horus-sun (Horizon) was sunrise as Horus was the Egyptian god of light and the day light portion of the 24 hour cycle. Set, was the god of darkness and night. He came on the scene at "Sun Set" and is the Jackal headed god of the Egyptian underworld. When we say "what a gorgeous Sun Set," we don't comprehend we are speaking as one might in aged Egypt. Darkness was the time of Set, god of darkness. Night time was not a good time in most aged mythologies. This is why many a priest stood every morning acting as if by incantation and arm waving, he could bring back the Sun/Son from the Underworld of darkness and fear. The sun descending into hell is something it did every Sun-Set. There was relief every morning when the sun/son was reborn.

Set murdered Osiris and in turn, Horus, son of Osiris, killed Set. Sunrise on the Horus-Sun defeats the night which began at Sun Set. Pretty cool huh? Jesus struggles with Satan (Set or Sata) in just the same way Horus battles with Set. It's all dualism. It's Light and Dark, good and evil, God and Satan.

"Set kills Osiris and scatters his body, then claims the throne of the gods for his own. He is later struck down by Horus, the son of Osiris, who restores order to the world and sets up the pharaohs as the guardians of Maat. Set and Horus continue to battle for operate of the world, setting up an epic conflict of good versus evil." (Light and Dark) David C. Scott Website. Gods and Mythology of Egypt.

Consider the fact that Jesus is surrounded by 12 disciples and the events of Jesus life are like the Sun of God surrounded by the 12 signs of the Zodiac that make up the way of the sun across the heavens in one year. Just as the 12 sons of Jacob and the 12 tribes of Israel are astro-theology personified and are in fact references to the zodiac and the story it tells. We might not watch the heavens anymore, and we know high-priced diminutive about the zodiac, the characters and the revolving story they tell, but our ancestors read the heavens as we read books today.

For instance, many of the world's crucified god men have their original birthday on December 25th ("Christmas"). This was a basic comprehension we had in Wcg and was not off the mark. Today, there is many times more material to show this connection.

This is because the ancients recognized that (from an earthcentric perspective) the sun makes an every year descent southward until December 21st or 22nd, the winter solstice, when it stops arresting southerly for three days and then starts to move northward again. During this time, the ancients declared that "God's sun" had "died" for three days and was "born again" on December 25th. So Xmas legitimately is the Birthday of the Sun/Son in every way.

The ancients realized quite abundantly that they needed the sun to return every day and that they would be in big trouble if the sun prolonged to move southward and did not stop and reverse its direction. Thus, these many dissimilar cultures predominant the "sun of God's" birthday on December 25th.

In reality, the sun "dies" for three days on December 22nd, the winter solstice, when it stops in its movement south, to be born again or resurrected on December 25th, when it resumes its movement north. For those three days it might be said the Sun is in the grave.

In December, the Virgin, the constellation Virgo precedes sunrise and thus, "Behold, a Virgin shall bring forth the sun/son," would be part of the story in the heavens. Matthew literalized the story in his reacing back into Isaiah for a story about a young woman that had virtually nothing to with prophecy of a literal virgin birth or Jesus himself.

Remember the alternative explanation of Isa. 14 and "how thou art fallen, oh Lucifer, (light Bringer-Venus precedes sunrise), thou arresting and morning star," (Venus). Remember how Venus appears to rise and then descends back into the earth and how this Is the origin of the story of Satan's fall for trying to ascend to God's Throne, which is astro-theologically Noon. every person sees "Satan fall as lightening from heaven" at one time or someone else During the year if you know what Venus looks like just before Sun rise on the Horus-sun, or even shortly after Sun-Set.

Something that arresting got humanity's attentiveness and the stories of it's apparent request for retrial followed and then were literalized by the theologically ignorant. Venus all the time was and all the time will be a planet on the inside orbit between earth and the sun. It behaves as it does because it is as it is. Whole theologies have grown up nearby that which could not then be explained but now can be legitimately explained. Once you have the true explanation, you can drop the false one.

The Jesus story in the gospels may also be the story of the Sun/Son of God.

The sun is the "Light of the World." Just as Jesus.

The sun "cometh on clouds, and every eye shall see him." Just as Jesus.

The sun rising in the morning is the "Savior of mankind." Just as Jesus.

The sun wears a corona, "crown of thorns" or halo. Just as Jesus.

The sun "walks on water." Just as Jesus.

The sun can turn water (rain) into wine (grapes) Just as Jesus.

The sun's "followers," "helpers" or "disciples" are the 12 months and the 12 signs of the zodiac or constellations, straight through which the sun must pass. Just as Jesus.

The sun at 12 noon is in the house or temple of the "Most High"; thus, "he" begins "his Father's work" at "age" 12. Just as Jesus.

The sun enters into each sign of the zodiac at 30°; (30x12=360 degrees) hence, the "Sun of God" begins his ministry at "age" 30. Just as Jesus.

The sun is hung on a cross or "crucified," which represents its passing straight through the equinoxes, the vernal equinox being Easter, at which time it is then resurrected. Just as Jesus.

(Archarya S.-- Suns of God/The Christ Conspiracy)

Consider the following.

The rejection of Cain's grain offering (Agricultural Goddess and fertility recognition of the religions surrounding Israel) and the acceptance of Abel's (roasted meat) offering was a symbol of the change to come in Israel from Matriarchy and female based religion, to Patriarchy, Priesthood and cultic temple worship and sacrifices. The story is not true, the message was clear! Women are now property and men own them, no matter what the "pagan" nations nearby institution or respect in the mysteries of the feminine and fertility. (sex if you must know!)

Little has changed in the Christian Patriarchy since which is why for years I allowed myself to say the words, "who gives this woman..." in marriage ceremonies. I stopped together with that in the wedding ceremony at the end. The Father all the time formally transferred his property to the grand and prime male and I had to be the priest in the middle negotiating the transaction! Men have had way too much time to screw up the planet and it's time maybe to let the feminine spirit restore the right side of the brain in humans! It's time to act as the one we legitimately all are inspite of that which divides us.

The physical sun has all the time fascinated human beings. It "rises" in the east to bring it's warmth, light, and "sets" in the West, plunging the world into darkness with all the connected insecurites and dangers. It was truly a miracle and a most welcomed relief when every morning, the Sun rose from the land of the dead to bring it's light and security for yet someone else day. It's cycles and apparent request for retrial straight through the constellations has told the story of mankind for thousands of years, with all our hopes and fears. The physical Sun has been much of the inspiration of the spiritual son mythologies.

We're all still sun/son worshippers at heart.

How To Read Jewelry Marks

How To Read Jewelry Marks

The number markings on high-priced gold jewelry are a bit of obscuring to lots of people. We are commonly used to seeing a karat or silver mark like this: 10K, 14K, 18K, Sterling, etc. The numbers mean the same thing.

For 14k the number is technically 583 but most manufacturers adopted the European way and make 14k gold a tiny bit over 14k, so the mark is 585 in most 14k jewelry. 18K is marked 750. If the mark is valid and there is a makers mark also in the jewelry, the number means these items are 18k gold.

Here is where the numbers come from. Pure gold is called 24 karat. For 18k gold, there are 18 parts of pure gold mixed with other metals to make the metal convenient for use in jewelry. 24k is too soft alone to stand up or to hold stones well. 18 parts pure gold divided by 24, or 18/24 equals 750. That is where the number comes from. The jewelry is 75% pure gold, 750 parts gold with 250 parts other metals out of "1000" parts. It is easier to think of it as a percent which is pure gold in the recipe.

Sterling silver is marked 925. Sterling is 92.5% pure silver and the rest is other metal, commonly copper.
What does it mean if the ring marked 14K Pr? The 14K naturally means it is 14K (Karat) gold and because of the K means it would have been made in either South East Asia or The United States. The Pr marks are just the Maker or Store Id or even a produce mark, and have no relevence to the Value.

The basic decimal formula to work out the quality of gold content is quite simple, as they are all measured in 'Parts per Thousand.' This means that 9ct gold is calculated like this: 9 (for 9ct) is divided by pure gold (24) and then multiplied by 1000 (for pure gold as a decimal). Ie: 9/24*1000=375 That 375 is the decimal quality for 9ct gold and is sometimes shown with a decimal point in front - .375

The old Victorian standard of 15ct gold is calculated the same way - 15/24*1000 = 625 (Not quite the numbers you have on your jewelry. Dental gold is 16ct or 666 recurring. But you can also reverse this formula by beginning with the decimal and working back. Ie: 375/1000*24 = 9

In your case we can use 698/1000*24 = practically 17ct
I have a platinum engagement ring and found a wedding ring that I beyond doubt like but the band is made of palladium. Is it safe to wear these two metals together without one damaging the other?

It will wear the softer metal Over Time but that could take many years. My Grandmothers wedding ring at last wore away the band of her engagement ring but it took over 20 years to do.

Platinum and Palladium and quite good together but I would take the advice of your local kindly jeweler and have them check both rings. Sometimes the Platinum may be a lower grade in order to make it harder - so have that checked.
